Between the Leaves
Last spring I had the fine pleasure of contributing an article to the Chicago Park Foundation Magazine, Between the Leaves.
The assignment was to profile Tommy Ingles, one of the founding members of Hyde Park Disc Golf. I hadn’t played disc golf since 1996 in Battle Creek, Michigan with a few dorm friends. Obviously, I would need to get out and throw a few novelty discs to get reacquainted with the the sport. Lindsey and Clarke accompanied me to the course in Jackson Park. This is the first and only 18-hole course in Chicago dedicated to disc golfing, designed, built and maintained by Tommy and his great group of volunteers.
We had an absolute blast. Clarke mostly rode along in her hiking bag but also got a few tosses in - not bad for a one-year-old hurler - more importantly she learned how to blow dandelion fluffs into the air. Like a lot of freelance work the article slipped my mind and when the edition of the magazine published just before the holidays it was a pleasant surprise. The sunny memories have me craving spring weather as I look out on this icy January day.
